School Outreach

Engineers Without Borders understands that today's youth are the people who are shaping the future of the world. That is why we have developed the High School Outreach program; to inspire young adults to learn more about the issues facing our world and to take action to promote positive change in the global society.

Through the Highschool Outreach program, volunteers from the University of Guelph Chapter visit high school classes to carry out workshops addressing issues related to global food security, access to clean and safe water, and energy. These presentations take an interactive, hand-on approach that encourages students to think critically about the issues being presented. Since the program began in 2003, over 30,000 students in Canada have been visited. There are currently three available workshops, Water for the World and Food for Thought, and Energy Matters.

Water for the World

Water for the World targets all classes who study world issues and sciences. The presentation contains audio and visual material as well as a hands-on section where the students get to try to build a water filter with limited resources to get a feel for the challenges of accessing clean water in certain regions of the world.

Food for Thought

The Food for Thought presentation targets nutrition and world issues classes. Students will shell rice and sell it to the “market” to gain an understanding of the difficulties in providing food experienced by developing countries.

Energy Matters

The brand new Energy Matters presentation targets world issues and science students. Through this presentation students have the opportunity to explore the different kinds of energy used around the world and how people’s access to energy can affect their lives.
